Reinstall or downgrade with macOS Recovery
Use the Recovery system built into your Mac to reinstall the current, latest or original macOS.
Every Mac since 2010 has a built-in Recovery system that can download and reinstall macOS over the internet. You don't need a USB drive or a separate download.
Apple silicon Macs
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until “Loading startup options” appears.
- Click Options › Continue, then choose Reinstall macOS.
Intel Macs: three key combinations
Turn the Mac on and immediately hold one of these until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe:
| Keys | What it installs |
|---|---|
| ⌘ + R | The latest macOS that was installed on this Mac |
| ⌥ + ⌘ + R | The latest macOS compatible with this Mac |
| ⇧ + ⌥ + ⌘ + R | The macOS the Mac shipped with, or the closest version still available |
The last option is the easiest official way to downgrade an Intel Mac to its original macOS.
Tips
- To downgrade, you usually need to erase the disk first in Disk Utility (inside Recovery). Back up with Time Machine before you start.
- Internet Recovery needs Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Networks that need a browser login, like hotels, won't work.
