Which macOS can my Mac run?
Find the newest and oldest macOS versions your Mac supports, by model and year.
1. Find your Mac's model and year
Choose Apple menu › About This Mac. The window shows the model name and year, for example “MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017)”. On very old Macs, click More Info.
You can also run this in Terminal to print the model identifier:
sysctl hw.model2. Find the newest macOS it supports
The tables below show the newest version Apple officially supports for each model. Any version between the one your Mac shipped with and this one will normally work.

These tables summarise Apple's compatibility lists. Before installing, check the exact model on the version's own page, because some years have models with different support.
3. Find the oldest macOS it supports
A Mac generally can't run a macOS older than the one it originally shipped with, because older releases don't include drivers for newer hardware. Apple's Terminal method follows the same rule, offering the shipped version “or the closest one still available”.
To reinstall the version your Mac came with, use macOS Recovery (on Intel Macs, Shift-Option-Command-R).
